this post is not in any way, shape or form sponsored – i am just so honestly a huge fan of this company and would love for you to know my favorite inside secret.
last year was a major year of change for those of you who have been around since last year you may remember. going through a lot of change made me really think about my own transitions into a more mature state of adulthood and take a look at many things, including my finances. apparently if you spend money, you don’t have it anymore? idk weird concept.
so after taking a hard look at my spending and where i could cut corners, i found a couple places where i just spend money so unnecessarily. starbucks? nah, not really jam. uber? i really only take it when i need to. flights? NOT UNNECESSARY – so they stayed. i noticed that here and there i’d pop into forever 21 or zara or mango or topshop and buy things here and there adding up to a three – four hundred dollars A MONTH. OF SHITTY CLOTHES. i started to tell myself – okay, don’t spend any more money on shitty clothes that will fall apart immediately and instead, once a month buy something for $150 to $200 so i can start creating a wardrobe of DECENT clothes that will last. smart right?
wrong. see, that plan lasted all of 4 seconds before i realized i liked the thrill of always having something new and pairing things together with my wardrobe. BUT HOW DO I SAVE MONEY AND ALWAYS HAVE GREAT CLOTHES?! isnt the point of a blog to show people fun new trends and ways to pair clothes together?! i can’t do that if i only have high waisted skinny jeans and white tee shirts (even though i would totally love to live in that outfit).
and then my friend brought to my attention that i shouldn’t be buying clothes, i needed to be renting them. and so began my journey with Rent the Runway.
What is Rent the Runway?
Rent the Runway is an online service that provides designer dresses, clothes and accessories all to rent! Have a wedding to go to? Have a work event to attend? Going on a fun vacation away? Instead of spending all this money for a new dress, a new outfit, a few new looks to wear – why not spend a fraction of that and rent high end designer clothing and handbags? Instead of spending $200 on a dress to wear to a wedding, you can spend $30 and hold onto it for a few days of fun, return it and move on with your day! It’s too cool.
How much does it cost and what do you get?
So!!! There are 3 ways to use their site and all 3 are amazing in their own way – I know this because I have used each of these services at some point lol
1 Pay as you Rent
This is pretty straight forward! If you have a specific event or reason to rent something nice, you choose your style (and a free backup size just in case!!) and pay a certain price to have that styles for 4 days. They cover cleaning, minor fixes that sometimes need to be made and return shipping. You’ll pay another ~$15 for insurance + shipping, but you can become a member and pay $20 a year (need to check on this…i believe its $20 lol) for ALL of your insurance and shipping! This is best if you see yourself renting more than 3 times a year, in my opinion.
2 Monthly Packages
For $99 a month, you can select 4 things each month and keep them for the duration of the month!! Maybe it’s a great work dress, maybe it’s an awesome tote bag, a trendy winter coat, you name it! You basically get 4 amazing things each month wear them as much as you want and return them at the end of the month for 4 new things. Such a fun way to swap items in and out of your closet all year and play with fun statement pieces!
3 Unlimited Membership
MY FAVORITE THING EVER!! I have this membership, which comes to about $175 a month, and you have UNLIMITED access to all items. You can have 4 things on you at a time and can keep things as long as you like. You can rent a dress, wear it once, send it back the next day and rent your next item. You can also rent pieces you want to hold onto for a while (like a $2,000 Iro Leather Jacket or a solid handbag) and keep it for as many months as you want! I swap 10-20 items in and out every month, wearing 3-4 brand new and awesome designer pieces a week, which is SO fun when you like to play with fashion and even BETTER when you work in the fashion industry!
What has your experience been like?
I’ve used Rent the Runway for years…like…years…and always have had overwhelmingly positive experiences. I even rented a dress for a wedding that I knew my ex boyfriend would be at, got the dress while out of town and HATED it, and they OVERNIGHTED me a new dress! FO FREE. Like…can you even?! It was so cool of them. They also have a chat feature so you can say to someone “ok, i’m going on a second date to a nice event so I want to look sophisticated but sexy…what do you suggest??” and they can help you find something. May or may not have done that myself.
They’re so quick turning things around that those 4 spots you can use on the Unlimited Plan really can be swapped for so many different things, which is great to get back into having fun with fashion and designers without spending hundreds and hundreds of dollars a month!
What if i’m not super trendy?
Do you wear clothes? THEN YOU’RE GOOD HOMIE. they have work clothes, everyday tops, tote bags, sunglasses, coats in the winter – it’s PERFECT!!
What are your 3 biggest complaints?
I do love this service, in fact, my friends joke that I should be a spokeswoman for them because I just love it so much lol there aren’t many terrible complaints to be honest – sometimes things arent available that you LOVE which stinks because you look forward to renting something that is perfect for you but you never get the chance. I also wish there were more stores but I know that’s not necessarily their problem. We have a storefront here, and I can walk in, drop 3 things off and walk out with 3 things. I’m curious if I would love it as much without the storefront option but I know people who love the service all the same and they don’t that opportunity to walk into the store and rent something on the spot.
The last thing would be, I guess, that sometimes I want to rent a “red off the shoulder top” and I can find cute off the shoulder tops that aren’t red, or red tops that aren’t off the shoulder so i’ll have to change an outfit if i want to go through RTR. Does that make sense? HARDLY A COMPLAINT because if i want a specific outfit, then i need to go buy it and stop bein a bratty B word. They have thousands of other options anyway.
What are your 3 favorite things about the service?
THE BEST part of the entire Rent the Runway website + experience are the customer reviews. Every item has pictures, feedback, reviews, etc from so many people so you know *exactly* what it looks like on a normal human beings body as well as which size is best for your figure. For instance, I’m 5’4″ and normally wear a size 6, so it will show people with those similar measurements and what size THEY ended up wearing! Why isn’t every website like that?!?
Also, ITS JUST SO FUN HOW ABOUT THAT!! I mean, I can rent gorgeous dresses and designer skirts and bags, do less laundry, have more clothes…i mean what more do I need to say? On top of that, it’s good for the environment over time – truthfully! I recycled a ton of clothes after renting for a while because i realized, i just didnt care about them anymore! More than that, it does wonders for your confidence (and my love of shopping) to have new things delivered throughout the week to your door – wear these new things and then swap em out later in the week…and so on and so forth.
ITS THE BEST and i’ve kept it my little secret for far too long!! here are some styles that are currently featured on RTR if you want to check it out yourself:
I highly suggest you give it a shot – it’s been a great thing for me to save money, have more fun with my wardrobe and take advantage of the recycle aspect of the site as well. Click here to get started, rent some fun thangs to amp up your style and let me know how you like it!!
And just in case you wanted to see what else i’ve rented, here are some other faves i’ve had:
