SOOOOOOOOO you may not know this but i’m a bit of a tech nerd. i’m totally an early adopter – i want to try the new stuff first, i want to check out new social media, play with gadgets, listen about new tech updates, marry Elon Musk…i want it all. Mainly the last one. When these smart home devices started hitting the market, i couldn’t stop reading about them and started buying some things here and there. Right now, 10% of homes have smart devices with an average of SIX SMART HOME DEVICES per each of those homes. that’s WILD! time for you to jump on the bandwagon – but enter at your own speed.
I’ve outlined which device you need based on your experience or price worth spending so check em out and have some fun talking to your walls. it’s acceptable now.
ENTRY LEVEL – Smart Plug
WeMo Plug– $30
If you’re not too tech savvy, don’t really want to spend the money on smart home products, or need a way to be *eased* into the technologically savvy home product world, the WeMo plug is PERFECT for you! This $30 plug is super easy to use – just plug in to your outlet, plug in whatever device you want to control and BOOM you’re set! The best ways I’ve found to use it is to plug your fan, humidifier, coffee machine or straightener into it and you can control and turn them on/off with the app on your phone! Are you someone who freaks out about if you turned off your straightener? Now you don’t have to worry! Do you want to come home to your humidifier or fan or heater on? Easy peezy you chilly or dry or hot human being. We can change that right quick -get you a WeMo and enter into the smart home world we all know and love.
STAGE 1 – Home Speaker
Amazon Echo – $100
Google Home – $100
Amazon Echo vs Google Home might be the new iPhone v Google Home debate of 2018 (don’t worry green texters, i love you all the same!). After going to the Google Home event last Friday where they showed all the ways that Google Home and I genuinely liked using it so much. Do I like more than my Amazon Alexa? I’m not sure…but I am definitely tempted to get one and try it for a month to test the difference. I use my Alexa EVERY DAY – mainly for music in the morning, playing podcast or audio books while i cook, telling me temperature and major news headlines of the day and…my favorite…ordering me Ubers 🙂 Do I *need* one of these? I mean, no I guess not, but it’s so convenient to be straightening my hair in the morning, listening to music and being able to make it louder just by telling it to, and then saying “Hey Alexa, whats the weather going to be like today?”… it just makes me feel like i can ask all my pressing questions for the morning (like whats on my schedule for the day) all while eating breakfast and getting ready.
Amazon Dot* – $40
Amazon Spot – $139
If you don’t yet want to invest in the Amazon Echo, you can also look into the Amazon Echo Dot for a lower price (but not as great of speakers) to place around your house or apartment and give it a go. They also just released the Amazon Echo Spot which i actually LOVE and kind of want by my bed!! With it’s alarm clock looking screen, it can show different notifications on it’s screen and i wouldnt have to go ALL THE WAY into my living room to ask Alexa what the weather is like for that day (this is a joke because my bedroom is literally touching my living room. I can shout to Alexa from my bed but whatever i’m lazy and love technology, let me live!)
STAGE 2 – FUN LIGHTS
Philips Hue Lights – $50
OK so you’ve got your WeMo plug, you’re set on your smart home speaker – want to start havin some real fun?! YOU NEED SOME PHILLIPS HUE LIGHTS! Ready to go to bed? Tell Alexa to turn off the lights. Want to set the mood? Tell her to dim them! You can even set it up that when you get at text or phone call, your lights change to a different color for a second! They can slowly turn on with the sunset and slowly turn off with the sunset if you want as well! EVEN BETTER! You can set up the lights in different rooms of your house and set them up with your Amazon Alexa so you can – from the comfort of your couch – say “turn on the bathroom lights” “change the lights outside to purple” or WHATEVER!! for you parents out there – can you imagine being able to turn on the lights in your kids room with an app on your phone?! With Hue Lights, now you don’t have to even think about whether or not you turned off the lights in your bedroom – just check the app and control it from your desk, miles and miles away.
STAGE 3 – CONTROL THE TEMP
Nest Thermostat – $250
Lights, Speaker, ACTION. (dorky joke i know). So what’s next?! What else can you deck out?! Easy – if you have central air, you need Nest Thermostat… i just lost all the new yorkers with “central air” lol … but really. With your phone, you can adjust the temperature in your space, it learns your patterns and adjusts the temperatures in different rooms, all while being your standard thermostat for your home. Did i mention it’s also super sexy? It looks great and sleek! The second I have a place with central air, i’m buying this thing. So 40 years.
STAGE 4 – LOSE YOUR KEYS
August Key Lock – $230
YOU GUYS ARE SO CLOSE TO HAVING THE SMARTEST HOUSE EVER YOU GUYS. and i saved THE BEST FOR LAST, the August smart lock. this device, i’m not exaggerating (okay maybe a little), makes me want to leave the city and go back to living in a house. It’s SO COOL. and I wish i could use this on my apartment. just like the others, there are plenty of different options in it’s category but in all my dorky googly eye tech loving research, August is by far the best. At just $58, this attaches to your interior door lock and detects when you are within feet of the door, automatically unlocking it for you – never to need keys ever again! Of course you can still use standard keys but still… okay and before you ask, what about the babysitter or dog walker or maid or mother in law or best friend who comes by all the time? GREAT QUESTION. Once they download the app, you can share “digital” keys to anyone you like, even specifying which times they’re allowed to be unlocked, etc. AKA the dog sitter can only use the key between a certain hour range, the friends can’t come by before 9am (I’M LOOKING AT YOU CHRISTINA) and your *cough* mother in law *cough* can’t drop in whenever she likes. You can even remote unlock – can you imagine how nice that would be if someone was visiting your house and landed early but -omg! you’re still at work! no problem, they can go to your place and you can unlock the door without hiding a key in plain sight outside. IT’S GENIUS AND I WANT ONE SO BAD I CAN’T EVEN TELL YOU. too bad i have a deadbolted front door on our building…and that nobody comes over. it doesnt matter let’s move on.
guys how excited are you to deck out your place?!? they say by the end of this year, a ton of homes will have some sort of smart device. we’re moving into Jetson era, folks, make sure you don’t get stuck with the Flintsones! the future is now, Zenon the Zequel style. if you don’t get what that is, we cannot be friends. too far? sorry love you mean it
